Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and are ready to start 2017! I want to personally wish each of you success in accomplishing your resolutions toward making 2017 the best year you’ve had so far.
I want to focus on one of the nine characteristics of high performing schools: Frequent Monitoring of Teaching and Learning. We are very good at gathering, reviewing, and analyzing our student data, and are consistently working on what to do with that data.
The first part of the Schallert Elementary Mission Statement is, “to strive for educational excellence by fostering a positive mindset, using multiple approaches to learning to meet the needs of all students,” The phrase “all students” is a critical component of that statement. It is our responsibility to ensure that all students in our schools have their academic needs met so they can achieve those high standards that we expect. We meet regularly to review student data and identify students who need additional support in specific areas. Teams are putting plans into place to help meet those needs, whether it be more time on learning tasks, additional assistance in the classroom, inclusion in one of our small groups for intervention, or behavioral support. Parents are integral partners in this process and we need you to join us in frequently monitoring your child’s learning.
Here are some ways you can help:
Ø Go through their backpack each night, checking for homework to be completed or important papers/communications to be read.
Ø Read to or with them every day. A high level of independent reading is one of the key indicators of school success—plus it is fun!
Ø Help them review their spelling lists, ask them to identify their grade level sight words.
Ø If you have computer access, encourage them to use their Istation, Reading Plus and Mathletics account to help build their skill sets in reading and math.
Ø Talk with them about the importance of school and getting a solid foundation for learning. The good habits they establish now in elementary school will serve them well for years to come.
Ø Praise them when you read those great stories or see a good grade on their latest assessment. They need validation for the good work they are doing.
Thank you for being our partners in learning and serving our students at Schallert Elementary. With frequent monitoring done by all of us, we can help realize that mission statement, helping each student to learn to high standards.
Happy New Year!
